History of the College
The National College of Photography was founded in 1994 and set out with a goal to provide the highest level of photographic instruction in South Africa. Located in Pretoria the College went from strength to strength and in 1997 they offered their first full-time, career based photographic course. By the turn of the century, the College had established itself as the premier, specialized photographic training institution in the country attracting many international students. In 2005 the College expanded to Johannesburg delivering both part-time and full-time courses. In 2008 the College was acquired by ADvTECH (Pty) Ltd, a listed company on the JSE. The National College of Photography has found its exciting new home with Vega The Brand Communications School a division of the Independent Institute of Education. This marriage of two creative giants in the world of art and visual communications has opened up fantastic opportunities for prospective students alike.

I want to do Photography as a hobby
Our part-time, short learning courses are designed for those students who wish to learn more about photography as a hobby. Classes are presented after hours during the week and on Saturday mornings. An extensive range of courses, starting at beginner’s level, enable you to learn at a pace that best suits you. Advanced courses covering a range of photographic disciplines are presented throughout the year. Courses are fun and packed with information.
I would like to make photography my career
The National College of Photography offers a one year full-time, *Higher Certificate in Photography. This specialised Higher Certificate programme is aimed at individuals seeking a vocational career in photography. The course is designed with a balance of practical, theoretical and artistic components which facilitates the enhancement of technical skill, creative thinking and academic growth. This programme will be available at the Vega campuses in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban.
Should I study part-time or full-time?
First complete a few of the part-time courses. With guidance from your lecturer, you can then make a decision. Many of our past full-time students have successfully gone this route.
*Pending registration on the National Qualifications Framework and approval by the Department of Education. This Higher Certificate Programme has already been provisionally accredited by the Council on Higher Education and will be awarded by the Institute.
