Light, is the primary source of energy and the main component of photography. From the relentless power of the sun to the beam from a single candle, light is what photographers aim to capture with its many moods and manifestations.
However primitive or sophisticated your photography equipment is, as photographers we aim to control, manipulate and recognize light. A good understanding of light is essential and the key to creating great images.
When using your camera on automatic, the in camera light meter measures how much light is being reflected into the camera. However, there is more to photography than just getting correct exposure. When taking images one needs to think about the angle of the light, shadows, highlights, and the introduction of additional light sources.
It is such a wonderful experience to meet someone with an overwhelming love for photography. Alastair McIlrae is one of those people, fiery and enthusiastic about learning Alastair enrolled on the Intermediate Photography Short Learning Programmes at the beginning of the year. Since then he has gone on to complete Expressive and Dynamic Photography and will soon be enrolling on the Portrait Photography and Black and White Photography programmes. Alastair describes how enrolling with Vega has opened his eyes to possibilities photography offers and instilled in him a passion to learn more about the photographic world. Alistair enrolled at Vega Pretoria, when I asked him why he chose Vega over other schools his answer was simple, "Well I had heard so many good things about Vega. Alastair's images are expressive and original, his love of photography is truly visible and I think we will see some fantastic images from Alistair in the future.
